Women of Gold is a multidisciplinary show presented in two formats: small (recital) and medium (theatrical performance). In both cases, the actresses converse with each other, the musician on stage, and the audience through theater, poetry, dance, and imagery.
During our recital, the audience will meet many ladies from the Spanish Golden Age theater by listening to:
What they did
What they said
What was said about them
…and especially how they lived and died, with thrilling lives full of comedy, drama, and above all, art.
Women of Gold is not a historicist, academic, or boring recital; rather, it aims to entertain, amuse, and share an important part of our history with the audience over the course of its 55-minute duration.
We analyze the importance of women in the Spanish Golden Age (1492-1659), which we believe has not been historically conveyed with the necessary rigor. In our classical tradition, unlike other European theaters, women were not only actresses (or deceivers), but also directors, playwrights, visual artists, etc.
We know from historical sources of dozens, hundreds of women who actively participated in the theatrical festivities of the Golden Age. But how many of their stories do we know? In *Mujeres de Oro* (Women of Gold), we want to recover lives, texts, and characters that have not reached the general public to demonstrate that women were an important part of our Golden Age. Unfortunately, many of the texts and testimonies have been lost and are recreated or fictionalized, but always with absolute historical rigor. We are not doing this show to be modern, but to be classical.
RUTH GABRIEL - Performer
She began working at the age of five in television programs such as La Cometa Blanca and Barrio Sésamo. She studied at the American School of Dramatic Art in Pasadena and classical theater in Florence with Gianni Sussini, dance theater with Rafaella Rossellini, and Luis Emilio Bruni.
Upon her return to Madrid, she entered the world of cinema with Imanol Uribe in the film Días Contados, for which she won the Goya Award for Best New Actress (1995), the Best New Actress award from the Union of Actors, the Ondas Prize, the Ojo Crítico, and Best Actress at the Courmayeur Noir Film Festival.
From there, her acting career took off in film, theater, and television. Among her film credits are 99.9, Doña Bárbara, Zona Hostil, and Los Asesinatos de Goya. Her theater work includes Crime and Punishment directed by José Carlos Plaza, Fuenteovejuna directed by Emilio Hernández for the CAT, The House of Bernarda Alba directed by Amelia Ochandiano, Summer directed by Tamzin Townsend, and Carlos Saura’s version of The Great Theater of the World. She has also starred in Linda Vista, directed by José Pascual, and The House of Bernarda Alba by José Carlos Plaza. Currently, she is on tour with Six Characters in Search of an Author by Pepa Gamboa and Antonio Álamo and promoting her book Women of Cinema.
RUTH GABRIEL - Performer
Graduated in Performance from the E.S.A.D. of Málaga. Studied Music Theory and Classical Dance at the Higher Conservatory of Málaga. She has written and directed theatre, but focuses on acting, participating in works such as Prometheus, Oresteia, The Night of the Tribades, among others, directed by José Carlos Plaza; Les Misérables by Victor Hugo, directed by Paloma Mejía; Hamlet by William Shakespeare, directed by Giraldo Loisés; The Open Couple by Dario Fo, directed by Gloria León.
Her role in The Sleep of Reason was awarded at the 32nd Union of Actors Awards with the prize for Best Supporting Actress. She is currently touring with Six Characters in Search of an Author by Pepa Gamboa and Antonio Álamo, Canaan by Philia Teatro, and An Afternoon with Death by JRivera Producciones. In cinema, she participated in 2021 in La Piedad by Eduardo Casanova, and has leading roles in Michael Collis' short films Surprise and Occupied, as well as in the short films Broken Lights, written and directed by Pedro Ruiz, and Reunion, by Alberto Cuevas.
On television, she has worked, among others, in the series H.I.T., The Ministry of Time, To Serve and Protect and Laura's Mysteries.
JORGE RIVERA
Bachelor's Degree in Stage Direction and Dramaturgy from ESAD Málaga, certified researcher in Applied Creativity (psychology), and holds a master's degree in Experience Economics from Roskilde University. Rivera has directed over 50 performances of various kinds in Spain and Denmark, where he was a musician in more than ten bands and composed music for theatrical performances. He currently accompanies Pedro Casablanc in the recital “Concierto de Amor y Muerte: Bécquer y Quevedo”, performing live the music he composed for the recital. He is also touring with the performance “Una tarde con la Muerte”, which marks his debut as a playwright.
