Ian Gibson - Lorca y la Generación del 27

Lorca and the Generation of '27 is a proposal that brings us closer to the life, work, and personal universe of Federico García Lorca, guided by one of his leading specialists and biographers, Ian Gibson. Through his narrative, Gibson will revisit the essential moments of Lorca's career, his personality, and his close relationship with the writers and artists of the Generation of '27, evoking friendships, encounters, and episodes that marked one of the brightest stages of Spanish culture.

The talk-recital will also address the final days of Federico García Lorca, the circumstances of his arrest and murder in 1936, and the investigations surrounding his death—a episode that Ian Gibson has studied for decades and that continues to be part of our country's cultural memory.

Words intertwine with music through the baritone Luis Santana and pianist and composer Víctor Carbajo, who will perform songs and pieces linked to Lorca's universe and his era, creating a dialogue between history, literature, and music.

A journey through Lorca, his friends from the '27 Generation, his work, his time, and his tragic end, told by Ian Gibson and accompanied by the emotion of live music.

IAN GIBSON - Interpreter

Ian Gibson was born in Dublin in 1937 but became a Spanish national in 1984. After teaching at universities in Belfast and London, in 1957 he made his first trip to Spain, to Madrid, knowing nothing about the dictatorship or who Franco was. And there he fell in love with Spanish culture and landscapes, with “an entire peninsula full of secrets and enigmas.”

In 1960, Gibson earned a degree in Spanish and French Literature from Trinity College Dublin. In 1962, he began his university career as a contracted professor of Spanish at Queen’s University Belfast in Northern Ireland. To gather material for his doctoral thesis on García Lorca, he made his second trip to Granada in 1965, accompanied by his wife, before starting work at the University of London in 1968. There he taught Hispanic literature and, from 1972, worked as a reader (the grade immediately below full professor) of Modern Spanish Literature.

During his university life, he published two works: La represión nacionalista de Granada en 1936 y la muerte de Federico García Lorca (Paris, 1971) and The Death of Lorca (London, 1972), an expanded and corrected English version of the previous book. In 1975 he settled in Spain, becoming one of the best-known Hispanists in the country. He earned a degree in Spanish and French Literature from Trinity College Dublin in 1960. After living in Madrid for several years, he moved to El Valle (Granada), from where he returned to Madrid in 2004.He has collaborated with various media outlets, such as El País and El Periódico de Cataluña, and has directed and presented several documentaries for the BBC.

LUIS SANTANA - Baritone

This Zamoran baritone began his musical studies at the age of five and has trained with great masters such as Juana Peñalver, Consuelo Barrio, María Teresa Manzano, Miguel Zanetti, tenor Pedro Lavirgen, and Teresa Berganza. He has performed in some of the most important theaters and auditoriums in Spain, including the Gran Teatre del Liceu, the Auditorio Nacional de Música, the Maestranza de Sevilla, the Teatro Cervantes de Málaga, the Teatro Calderón de Valladolid, or the Victoria Eugenia de San Sebastián, as well as developing an intense international activity in cities such as Rome, Paris, Milan, Budapest, Vienna, Lisbon, or Riga. He has worked under the direction of prestigious conductors and starred in memorable concerts such as Beethoven's Ninth Symphony at the Auditorio Nacional alongside the Orfeón Donostiarra, Mozart's Requiem at Seville Cathedral, Brahms' Requiem at the Old Cathedral of Salamanca, or notable tributes to Teresa Berganza, Victoria de los Ángeles, and Ainhoa Arteta.

His artistic versatility has allowed him to tackle a wide repertoire that encompasses opera, zarzuela, oratorio, and recitals. He has participated in important national and international festivals and shared the stage with prominent figures in the Spanish musical and theatrical scene. Among his most notable performances are concerts before Their Majesties the King and Queen of Spain at the Basilica of El Pilar in Zaragoza, collaborations with artists such as Nati Mistral, Paco Valladares, or Rosa Torres-Pardo. His career has established him as one of the most recognized and appreciated voices within the Spanish lyrical repertoire.
